I Am Back

Time flies! Before going back to my hometown, I look back the experience for the whole year in the U.S. and find how interesting it is for the large change of my feeling to lives. I still remember vividly that one year ago before my coming, I said to myself I would work hard and study hard and such things. However, after I really come here, I find instead of working hard like us, the U.S. people&39;s lives are colorful and comfortable. They seldom work overtime, they seldom worry about the money in their pocket, they go for holidays, and they often take leisure time in weekends. So the most doubtable thing to me is, why the professors and students in the U.S. can achieve better performance than us while they do not work hard than us. After the whole year passed, I think I have found the answer. And the answer is simply indeed, efficient, efficient, still efficient. It seems that they can always keep working efficiently than us.

Then the following question is, what reasons can lead this situation? I think there are three reasons.

First, most of professors and students in the U.S. love their jobs. They do the research work because they really like to do these, they can get happiness and find the value of their lives from their jobs. In fact, in the U.S. if you do not like to do research work, then you will not choose to get the P.H.D degree. Many other jobs can also give you chance to live well. However, in our country, most of us believe study may be the best way to have a good future lives. So we have to study harder and harder, then we get the master degrees, we get the P.H.D degrees. But we seldom ask ourselves, is that what we really want? Am I really love to do research, really love these mathematical equations? When the work is not what you really want, the only thing you can do is to make less valuable papers and, depending on these less valuable papers, to get high job titles and more research projects. And of course you can not work efficient than those who really love their jobs.

Second, most of professors and students in the U.S. do not need to face many other things which may distract them. But for us, we cannot flee from these things. We always want to do reforms, and declare we try these reformulations so that we can work better. Is that really true? Look at the reimbursement systems, I can still remember, several years ago, students had to queue overnight for their second day&39;s reimbursements. Look at the graduate management systems, I am even not sure the exact length for the study period of the masters, two years and a half or three years? Look at the classification systems, I have learned many different classification ways for academic journals: 226, 178, EI, SCI, SCI partition, and CCF recommended journals. But I am not sure, maybe some day a new classification will appear. Who knows. I can still list many other things like those. We have to face many continuous reformulations and study them. Then, how many time left for us to do our research work?

Third, most of professors and students in the U.S. do not need to worry about their futures. To their students, if they grasp enough knowledge, then they will get a good job and live well. But to our students, even when we get good academic qualifications, we may still have to face that we can not find good jobs and have not enough money to buy houses. To their professors, if they work well, then they will have enough money to buy villas. And based on the good welfare systems, their parents and their children will not be their burden. But to our professors, even we have the stable jobs which many others may appreciate, we still have to face the money problems, the house problems, to face the illness problems, the oldness problems, and so on.

I mention these problems and I also know that many problems are lead by our society and our living environment, and we can not change them by ourselves. However, I think we can still do something to make us living better. By doing these, I think we should first ask ourselves why we need so much desire? You want to earn more money, you want to buy larger house, but why you need these? If you have a peaceful heart and a warm family, you will be happy even you live in a small house. If you can find some work which you really like, then keep working on it. Maybe you may not succeed at once, but you will eventually be successful because you will be efficient when doing your favorite work. So try to find your deep heart.

Remember, beyond the pots and pans, there should be poetry and the far afield.
